The lace gives it a added bit of style, but raising the bodice would give it a different look. I have noticed in the catalogues that the in thing in sleeves if to gather the bottom edge of a sleeve like this blouse's sleeves for a puff ball look.
Christine, I did raise the original bodice an inch. (I think three would be better.) A zipper is necessary because it's a fitted style. I wondered that as well.
Here's the finished product. If I had it to do over again (I guess I could, but don't want to) I'd just raise the center bodice piece more.

Did you raise the bodice in the original pattern? and Would a zipper be necessary? The neck looks easy enough to get over a head.
